New Year News from Maranatha Gateway

Since our arrival in October we have put in a clean water well for the community, built a kitchen, put the solar panels on the roof and built a ‘solar fridge’, completed the Eco San toilet ( which is now in operation),  finished the inside of the dormitory, painted the doors and windows and put up drain pipes and water butts.  We have also  made good progress on the shower block, built a pen for the piglets and planted a little garden by the kitchen.
Our jobs to finish by end of January are completion of the shower block, glass for dormitory and bunk beds in place, to build a permanent pig pen and transform the piglet pen into a chicken house. and grass for round the well and the Eco San.  Tests have resumed on  the brick making machine and we hope to have bricks ready for building by the end of the month.
We (Sue,  John & Mike) are doing well and mostly enjoying the challenges we face each day.  When the rain is bad we cannot get out and life can be difficult. But we are coming into the dry season so collecting water from the well ( a good 80 m hike down and up)  will be a different challenge.  We are still chasing paperwork for various essential departments and also pray we will succeed in the next few weeks.
All things working together for good we hope to run our first course in February – this will concentrate on the brick making and brick laying.  As yet we don’t have any funding for the courses. The costs of teachers, food for the students as well as course materials will probably work out about  £25 per student per week.  Ability to run the courses will depend on donations and sponsorship.
