November 4th Update from Sozi, Ssese Islands, Uganda

Exciting news – the Marantha Gateway Community Well was completed yesterday and will be available for our use by Wednesday.  This is to allow the cement to dry thoroughly.  Because we had to use the lower site as the position for the well, we also have to construct a clear path and  safe steps.  We are having the official opening of the Well next Wednesday 13th with the chairman of the local council, other members of the council and our neighbours – apparently about 20 households –  most of whom are well hidden! We will provide food (matoke and beef stew) and a soda drink – as this is customary here whenever there is a function, and it will be a great opportunity to get to know our neighbours.

The dormitory has been plastered inside and the floor levelled and concreted.  We are waiting for the walls and floor to dry out before we can get on with the painting.

We have changed the building plan and brought forward the construction of the kitchen on the side of the house due to constrictions of preparing and cooking food for ourselves.  Hopefully this will be completed by the end of the week, and should make life a lot easier.

We are hoping to have a visit from the principal of the local agricultural college in the next few days and we hope he is going to give us advice on what we can grow and how best to manage the animals – especially the pigs which look like they will be transferred from the school in Kalangala to Sozi.

Bridge of Hope

John and Sue Gasston joined Mike Norbury in Kalangala on Wed 16th October. This is the latest report from them.

We have visited the Bridge of Hope  School and we plan to start on the roof of the nursery block in the next couple of weeks. The photo above shows one of the primary classes hard at work…….well except for certain distractions!
We have had the surveyor and the exploratory team of diggers on the land at Sozi today looking at the best position of the well. Work on final positioning of the well should begin next week. The plastering of the  classroom /dormitory should be underway this week.
One of our pigs has just had 9 piglets and we pray they will all survive.
We have spent a few days in Kampala collecting the brick making machine which will be shipped to Kalangala tomorrow.
We are moving forward and making progress already.
Many challenges still to overcome.
